Throughout this article "Managing CD images", we made the acquaintance of the ISO format and its "descendants". There, we said that this is an extremely convenient way to manage and complete copies of its virtual optical disks, for backup purposes or to facilitate the sharing network. It was also shown how to use some freeware to burn these files, creating in fact an almost identical copy of the original media.

More recently, MegaLab.it published "Managing the ISO without burning: Complete Guide to DAEMON Tools", a guide focused on a potetene free software that lets you "mount" the ISO images as CD / DVD virtual easily accessible from My Computer.

To complete the discussion, a very important piece missing: how to create ISO images starting from their records? Throughout this article we will see how using different software.

What you can scan and what does not

The techniques proposed here are designed primarily to make digital copies of data discs, or those containing programs and documents.

By working with these media, there is generally no big problems. The only problems you may have tried to create ISO images starting from medium protected by anti-copying technologies. Most of the games, for example, is not directly Unscannable in this way: it is usually possible to take advantage of the programs described to create the ISO, but applications that require you to insert the disk before running it refuse to work with the copy digitally. DAEMON Tools offers several features specifically designed to counter this problem, but it is something that I have not been able to document or test.

As for DVD and Blu-ray videos, the situation is different: these supports may not be copied almost never like this. In this circumstance, you must turn our attention elsewhere: in particular, it is necessary to use one of the software discussed in "How to release a DVD Video from copy protection."

Different situation further with regard to CD Audio: these discs, less aggressive protections, can generally be converted into ISO without problems.

Legality

The use of these programs to make copies strictly personal and not transferable to a third party media regularly purchased should be completely legal. At least until it also preserves the original media.

As mentioned several times, however, am not a lawyer, and I have absolutely no skills suitable to quibble about it. So I recommend anyone concerned about this issue (especially for business use of the technique) to contact a qualified attorney before proceeding.
