The procedure of "product activation" that Microsoft has included in all versions of its operating system since Windows XP, is now known to all: You have 30 days, starting from the moment install the software, to provide a valid product key and complete a short wizard.

During this operation, Windows contacts a remote server that verifies the validity of the code entered, and thus allows the full functioning without any time limit.

But as sure that the procedure has been completed correctly and avoid unpleasant surprises in the future?

From GUI

The first mode to verify that your copy of Windows is actually activated can be reached through the graphical interface.

Open the Start menu , click the right mouse button on Computer and then select Properties .

If the screen shows an indication like the one below, the product has not yet been activated: expire soon after the specified number of days

If the procedure has been completed successfully, the screen will look like this

More information on the command line

Although the method proposed above is quite practical to immediately display the activation status of the product, the script by using the Software Licensing Manager (slmgr) with appropriate parameters, we can obtain much more detailed information on the license.

To prove this, select Start -> Run ( Win + R from the keyboard, if it is not shown) and type slmgr.vbs-xpr .

If your copy of Windows is not activated, a warning will be shown like this

Otherwise, the message will be much more reassuring

But, he said, using this script you can also get very detailed information: try to re-launch it as slmgr.vbs-dlv

Among the many data shown, see also the type of license (including OEM , that is sold in connection with the purchase of a new PC, or Retail , for copies purchased as a boxed product, will be the most common terms).

Other parameters for slmgr.vbs

The two parameters treated -xpr -dlv and , are probably the most interesting ones.

The command slmgr.vbs it also includes many others to see them all, simply run the script without specifying any additional flags.
